Advent Day 16 - For unto us

Day 16 - thoughts from the ChurchApp team

Unto us a child is born

Jeremy

My favourite Christmas reading has always been Isaiah 9:6, especially from the Kings James Version, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

I love the language used in the Kings James Version of this Christmas reading; it always feels more poetic and a lot more like Christmas to me. The verse itself is beautiful, particularly in Handel’s Messiah, which I loved to sing in my old school's choir. The verse completely sums up Christmas - a time to remember God’s promise to us of His Son; the perfect embodiment of Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Especially in a time of worldwide trouble it is very encouraging to remember that His and every government is on His shoulder. He is in control.
