Responding to a need
As part of our response to COVID-19, we're excited to be able to offer the opportunity to train as a web developer at ChurchSuite. Embarking on this journey is something we feel God has placed on our heart, offering employment and a new career for individuals who have been affected by Coronavirus. Whilst creating an opportunity for those affected by COVID-19 is our primary intention, you are not precluded from applying should that not be your present situation.
It is our hope that at the end of your training period, we will be able to offer you a full-time permanent position on our team. We have a strong pedigree of taking graduates and junior developers, training them and helping them to move forward in their careers; we believe that we can do the same for you.
We believe, based on our past experience, that we can successfully train candidates who are humble, hungry and smart. We do not expect prior knowledge of programming, but this is a technical role and candidates should be able to demonstrate a passion for technology, a strong problem-solving ability and an understanding of how the Church operates.
What you will learn
Over the course of your training period, you will learn a wide variety of technologies that represent the ChurchSuite technology stack. This includes but is not limited to:
HTML - know how to format a document properly, understand the different tags
Git - Understand how Git source control works and the principles of branching, etc.
CSS/SASS - Understand how to use CSS to style a document, how to use SASS to compile down to CSS
Javascript - Understand what VanillaJS is and how to use it to access and manipulate the DOM
PHP - Understand modern OOP with PHP7
SQL - Understand how to query a MySQL database, how keys and indexes work and the performance benefits they bring
PHPUnit - Understand the principles of Unit Testing and how the PHPUnit framework works.
Tailwind - Understand how to use the Tailwind CSS framework to build a well-structured HTML document
jQuery - Begin to use and understand what jQuery is and what it's capable of
REST APIs - Understand HTTP headers, response codes and the difference between HTTP methods
Docker - Be able to use docker-compose to configure containers in a basic network
AWS - Understand how the different AWS technologies work together. Be able to identify which AWS technologies we use as part of ChurchSuite.
These technologies will be learned through a combination of online courses (individual learning), tutor lead sessions and group challenges. You will be expected to work both individually and as a group with other trainees. At times, the trainee group will be joined by a member of the development team as we seek to continually train all staff members and help them improve.
How you will learn
At the start of the training period, you will interact primarily with other trainees and different members of the development team, dependent on topic. After a few months of learning, we will begin to integrate you into our project lifecycle, giving you an opportunity to contribute towards the development of ChurchSuite. Towards the end of your training period, it is our hope that you will have been sufficiently trained such that you can be an active project member, regularly contributing towards the improvement of ChurchSuite.
Whilst we have a permanent office in Nottingham, we are a part-remote company, with 5 of our 17 team members working remotely full time. Once each quarter we gather together as a company to spend time as a team, review our recent work and look ahead to our upcoming challenges; as a member of the ChurchSuite team, you would be expected to attend these "Q-Days". Additionally, we may require you to travel to Nottingham in order to be part of a development planning day or other activity. In total, we do not expect to ask you to be present in Nottingham more than once per month during your training period; it's likely to be significantly less than this, particularly given current events.
